Dog Training vs. Humanizing Dogs

Dog Training vs. Humanizing Dogs

If you have gone through one of our dog training/board and train go home sessions, you have heard me explain the consequences of “humanizing” a dog. I explain to clients how humans tend to project what they need or feel on to the dog – ultimatley elevating the dog to the level of a human. Or, in worse cases…sometimes above the level of a human. In these cases, you see so many problems start to manifest themselves such as aggression, separation anxiety and more. Below is an excellent narrative from Tyler Muto of K9 Connection talking about just that. “We as humans have evolved in the way that we incorporate dogs into our lives. We expect that our dogs have evolved as well. To be almost human, to be something other than what nature has created. Your dog can’t understand the way we humans look at the world. They can’t see the world as anything other than how a dog would see it. Humans however have the unique ability to put ourselves in the shoes of another. To attempt to see things from a different perspective than our own. Putting in the work to see the the world through the eyes of your dog is one of the greatest gifts you can give them. Consider this quote from renowned canine ethologist Adam Miklosi: “Extensive experience formed by living with dogs often leads to the misconception that a dog is a ‘fur-covered human’ (babymorphism), and the society often calls on the dog to behave in contradiction to its own biology. This kind of view is expressed by the concept of...
Creating A Safe Dog Training Experience For Your Dog

Creating A Safe Dog Training Experience For Your Dog

So folks inquire sometimes, why so stringent in our requirments in regard to dogs being up to date with vaccines etc as it pertains to our board and train program. Especially the fecal exam. Well, the first reason being, our insurance required it. If you operate this type of business and do not ensure your clients…you are asking for trouble. That’s how seriously we take your dog’s experience with us. There is a reason behind everything we do. Note our requirements that you see on our deposit invoice in the photo…current on all vaccines, preventative meds and a fecal float to ensure no parasites. A dog with any parasite that gets excreted into the soil, well…it’s so hard to get rid of them in the soil. Yes, most owners are current on preventative meds however, nothing is 100%. We will not admit any dog that has active, transportable parasites as well as dogs that are undergoing any treatment for irritations, infections etc. These things many times cause discomfort which in turn can adversely affect training and, other dog’s health. We do this to ensure the safety and health of every dog that is scheduled to benefit from their BTK9...
Crate Training For Dog Training

Crate Training For Dog Training

We have had a couple of these this past year. The first shot is a screenshot of our two week board and train price. But, notice the requirements…”ALL DOGS MUST BE CRATE/POTTY TRAINED”. There is a very good reason for this. If we spent all of our time crate and potty training and cleaning up messes as you see here, we would not have near the time to do actual dog training. We completely understand there may be an occasional accident, it happens. This particular dog had two late night rotations before we went to bed. When we got up at O’Dark Thirty to let the dogs out, there was poop all in the crate. After letting this dog out and cleaning it up, the dog peed two more times in the crate during rotations. We hate to send dogs home before their time because our program opens up so many possibilities for dogs and their families. PLEASE! If you are considering our program, make certain you have taken the time to crate and potty train your dog. If your dog isn’t crate or potty trained yet, we have several colleagues that do great in home training that we...
Continue Your Dog’s Board and Train at Home

Continue Your Dog’s Board and Train at Home

BTK9 Thought: The one thing we expound on when it comes to our clients (and this may sound a little blunt), however – many times when it’s time for a pick up session, we are not giving you back a “Lassie”. There is no wave of the magic wand. This of course all depends on what the issues/behavior was. We have the dog for two weeks, give or take. So many times, issues like aggression, guarding, brattiness etc. are behaviors (or symptoms) that have been patterned over a longer period of time than say, a two week board and train program. We give the dog and the owner new behavior and choices to pattern. Out with bad, in with the good! When the dog goes home, the same exact structure and leadership must continue at home to a TEE! The owners are truly the ones that will make it work with steadfast dedication. All In!

BTK9T Tip: We recently had an inquiry not to long ago about dog training where the person stated that one member of the family would probably not follow the rules and structure put in place by a board and train regiment. You can have two people in your household or ten. All it takes is one person to stray from what they have to follow with their dog and all the training the dog went through is for not. When we get inquiries, I tell the potential client that we train the dog for a specific amount of time – and then we are done (we are there for support and follow-ups). They have to continue what we started for the dog’s entire life! ALL IN!!!!
